MacBook Pro Storage volumes

Hi, I was wondering whether someone could explain what a VM means and why it is there, so that I can discard them as potential causes for my computer slowing down.

My Mac VM file expanded when it had never before, should i be concerned? My VM Disk in my Hard drive randomly expanded from 2.15GB to 3.22GB today, for more than a year the VM files have always been 2.15GB but for some reason it increased to 3.22GB. I checked activity monitor, and it says the swap used is only 400mb, which is far smaller than the VM files. Why is this happening? Should I be concerned? What causes this? How do I stop The VM files from expanding? It's never got this big before, does a restart revert the size back to normal? I was just using my Mac usually, so what caused this to increase?

to Check MBP's Used and Available Storage Space in Disk Utility Hello, My machine is MacBook Pro 16, 2023, with Apple M2 Pro. I checked the used and available storage space in Disk Utility. Under the primary Container disk, it says there's 20K VM and 900MB disk space not mounted. Apple Support suggested to upgrade the systme to the latest, so I did from Ventura to Sonoma 14. However, after the upgrade, checked Disk Utility again, VM is now 1.07GB and another 1,06GM not mounted. How can I "recover" (not sure if this is the correct term) it? I could really use the space as my hard drive is small. Thank you!

VM is virtual memory, it’s your Mac using the SSD as supplemental RAM. Do not delete that, although I suspect if you did the system would just re-create it.

This MacBook is new so I was wondering what is taking up so much space, but you are saying it is normal for it to be there?
