Timemachine external disk won't eject

I try to eject the external hard disk that has my Time Machine backups on it but it continually says that it cannot be ejected because its in use.

I think it's Spotlight that's accessing it, but I cannot stop it, or add the disk to the areas for Spotlight to ignore.

I have to shut the computer down to eject the disk safely. Very annoying!

Partial solution:

  • Click on the Eject button by the external disk with the Timemachine backup
  • Open Activity Monitor
  • Highlight the processes: mds and mds_store
  • Click the Stop button at the top left (circle with cross)
  • Choose Quit to quit both processes

(NB: This needs to be done fairly quickly, ie: before Finder says that the disk cannot be ejected because it's in use)

Both these processes will briefly stop before restarting.

During those few seconds, the disk should be able to eject itself.
