Iphone 8 repair

Dear Community,

I have bought a Iphone 8, 2 years ago ( I know the warranty is over).

I have only recently been experiencing battery issue.

The battery health dropped to 80% and the phone would not function without a charger.

I live in South Africa and the phone was bought aborad.

I have now sent the phone to a Istore for repairs and the so called authorized dealer, has informed me that I am expected to pay the full price for a new phone.

This is only a battery fault.

Or is this a money making scheme.

What do I do ? I just want my phone to get fixed....I thought Apple is advanced in all these matters

Does anyone know?

If it is only the battery (and health of 80% suggests it is) then he is lying. It is possible though that it is the charging circuit that has failed (the phone should still work at least for a short time on battery with 80% health). Does the battery charge at all? If not, have you tried a different charger and USB cable?

Do you have any actual apple locations nearby?

I took my phone in (uk) for the same original fault, the authorised repairer would not fix it and got me to send it to apple. Apple said it wasnt a battery issue and wanted £346 to repair it so I paid as 3 (my provider) said they covered the repair cost (13 month old phone).

The invoice from Apple says it was repairable damage so 3 will not pay. Apple never mentioned damage in any of their communication.

I am now £346 out of pocket!!!! What's going on!!

According to there Authorized dealer here this was the diagnostics that will cost the same as a new phone. "PRESSURE MARK VISIBLE ON THE BOTTOM LEFT CORNER OF THE DISPLAY( This I understand can be dead pixels = LCD screen needs replacement) RESTARTS UNEXPECTED AND GETS STUCK IN BOOT LOOP. QUOTE FOR WHOLE UNIT REPLACEMENT.( getting stuck in boot loop = restoring or updates caused this error, which means it is fixable by restoring the phone back to factory settings).

Have you ever heard of these defects.

Unfortunately in the UK you can trust dealers. Here in South Africa its like finding a needle in a hay stack !!!!

But thank you I have started searching for second opinions regarding my phone.

I think its the only solution.

What is going on is your phone is out of Apple’s warranty .

However in UK under consumer protection the retailer Three is responsible way past 12 months. As this has not lasted as long as you would reasonably expect frim a top end product then you should ask for a partial (like 2/3) refund of your repair cost based on your expectation of how long it should have lasted (like 3 years) which will probably be refused by Three.

Three have an alternative dispute resolution (ADR) agent and you should google them and open a case quoting consumer protection act.

If that fails you could give 28 days notice that you will go for a small claim in a county court but expect to be up against a QC.

The above does not represent legal advice which I am not qualified to give.

Thanks Peter. 3 WILL pay for the repair, I believe, but not damage and as Apples invoice has the words "repairable damage" they are hesitant to pay out. My major grief is with Apple as they did not and have not informed me that there was any damage as I would not have sanctioned the repair if so. Apple has not or will not send me a repair log identifying the actual cause of the fault. But, if they are saying it is damage I have no idea as to why as I am extremely careful with all my possessions and it looked as new when sent in.

If Apple have asked me to pay for a REPAIR but believed it was damage then they should have stated exactly that.

Thanks again.

I do have Apple locations I have visited 2 Istores in South Africa , both advised that I send it in for a battery replacement. Now the Authorized service provider that does the battery replacement wants me to pay the price upfront for a new Iphone.....I dont trust there opinion cause I do believe that its only the battery!!! I just cannot understand why they want me to pay close to $800 for a new phone.....I dont know who to contact at Apple to help me with this as I believe they trying to con me!!
