My apple watch app is not recognizing my internet connection, HELP!!

Please help! My series 1 watch was in need of a software update but does not recognize the phone's internet connection. At this point my watch has been reset to factory setting & won't even pair because it's perpetually stuck trying to upgrade the watch. I have not connected directly w Apple Support yet but that is my next step. Any advice or assistance welcomed!
