Every time I select upgrade now I get an error saying " An error occurred while installing the selected updates." but no further detail as to why? It doesn't even start to download..... any one else having this issue? or any idea how to resolve? I have a MacBook Air 2017 - so it's compatible with the update.....

They resolved problems with the servers themselves. The servers are fully functional, just overloaded. It would be great if they had a traffic indicator, in addition to just noting the servers are up. https://www.apple.com/feedback
Ok got it working and downloaded
These are the steps I did.
Deleted the following:
Go to
Library
Preferences
Delete “com.Apple.softwareUpdate.plist”
Empty Trash
Restart Computer
Select The Apple Top Left
Go to about this Mac
Select Software Update
Hi, I had the same problem! So I did this
In Finder Go > Library then there goto Caches Then in ~/Library/Caches select anything modified since trying to macOS updated and put it all to Trash. Empty Trash and restart. Then System Preferences started Big Sur download just fine!

I’m here to tell you that such are coincidental!
I found a remote server authentication error in my Console.
I tried the Big Sur download, again, to confirm, but my download began, finally.
I hadn’t actually changed anything!
All it took was to wait until the remote server had it’s authentication updated.
gdgmacguy, sort of alluded to this, in a sense.
I tried it again last night and it finally started getting past the error. It took about 10 minutes to download the installer and about 20 minutes for the actual install. No issues so far with the OS. All my apps are working fine.
The fix, audrey-zha12, is perseverance.
Oh. And forget about the “fixes” you see here, from various users: such were coincidental, only.
(Assuming, of course, you have sufficient Available drive space.)
Apple states on its System Status page that the issue has been fixed. Unfortunately, it has not. I'm one of thousands that are still experiencing this faulty install. Please fix ASAP Apple.

I tried this and it appeared to be working until around 10 gb into the download, then it started giving me the "installation failed" error again. Does anyone know how to fix this?
