Since I installed macOS Big Sur, there are missing fonts that now display an interrogation point in some web pages and in emails. I can't even write an email now!
That's what it looks like.
I went in the Font Book and activated all the fonts. I tried resetting the font cache as suggested online, and then restarted the computer, but the problem still persists.
I hope I can find a solution soon!

I'm using Suitecase, so I searched for Helvetica, and just right-clicked to remove them from the app. I didn't delete them from the computer, just removed from the app so they wouldn't try to auto-activate. Then cleaned the font cache and restarted. That did it for me.
I just solved it by removing any and all Helvetica fonts from my font manager, then adding back in the ones that are not included now with the OS: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT211240
What a mess, I expect better from Apple.
Use an encoding appropriate for the language of the webpages you view most often. This option is useful if webpages appear garbled.
To change the encoding for a specific webpage, view the page in Safari, then choose View > Text Encoding.

If it is a corrupt font cache for your Mac you can try removing all font cache files including system and logged in user account.
Quit all running applications.
From the terminal.app copy and paste:
sudo atsutil databases -remove
(Please note your psswd will not echo on screen)
After entering the command, quite Terminal and restart your Mac
It is interesting, I did this Terminal script, and it did get rid of the issue momentarily, but it came back once I started using Safari or Mail. I am on a new Mac Mini M1 (I migrated from my Mac Pro. ), which is a bit problematic, since Suitcase is not supported on this machine, so I cannot turn On/Off fonts. I am afraid I may have to reset to factory and avoid the Migration Assistant. Talk off the ledge!!!
Nobody has the answer or has the same problem?
I mean, when I get to a website and that's what I see:
In Safari, check that your Default encoding is set to: Unicode (UTF-8) instead of the two Western ISO or Mac settings.
I can't seem to delete or deactive Helvetica. How did you do it? And what do you mean the ones not included with the OS?
I did that, but it did not help.
Just tried it, but I still get the same problem 🙁
Oh well, I use Suitcase too, and that's exactly what fixed the problem! I just deactivated all the Helvetica I had in Suitcase and it fixed the problem 😮
