Is there a way of being able to see the battery percentage like in the good old days, without having to open up the battery icon?

Yes there is. Go to dock and menu bar in system preferences and check the box that says show percentage in Menu Bar.

Thank you Mr TaylorMark1234! That solved it. With my primitive logic I looked for things to do with the battery under 'battery preferences....
