How do I make my IPOD gen 3 functional?

I am having a IPOD Gen 3 and am unable to play my Apple Music , I used to use it in my car but had shelved it for a long time , now the iPod os does not upgrade to latest and most App Store apps don't install. I just want to be able to use my Apple Music subscription on it . Any ideas how this can be done

IOS version -> 5.1.1, it says it is up to date. Model -> MC008LL

Any suggestions would be welcome
