How do I increase Big Sur system font size?
How do I increase Big Sur system font size? I am finding the new menu bar font almost impossible to read.

A call to Apple support and a really simple configuration fix. Instead of focusing on preferences - accessibility - display ; go to preferences - displays - display and resolution. You can tick scaled and increase the resolution which really helps. You don't lose much at all in terms of sharpness - almost imperceptible, but you gain a lot in terms of system fonts. For those struggling with this... worth a try. Apparently I was not the only person whom she dealt with asking about the same issue. I am hoping Apple captures this systematically and we will soon see 11.01.00 release with more universally accessible system font sizes.

Apple isn't here – we're all just users like yourself. Use this form:

You have to restart the computer

Thanks, I was using that command set but the menu bar size did not increase the menu bar size at least to any extent that I can see. Contrast helps a bit, but still the font size on the menu, on safari are just too small. I am surprised as Apple prides itself on accessibility. I will try with tech support to revert back to Catalina and see where I go with my Macs.... it is that bad for me.
This still made very little adjustment to anything on the menu bar. Yes, you can zoom onto a page, but I had my Catalina set up so I could actually read my menu bar, and this is nearly impossible. They need to provide an update that allows the user to view extra extra large rather than their "large" which is like 8point font on the screen of a 13" MacBook Pro!
I am in my 50's and also thought that Big Sur was harder on my eyes with font size then Catalina was. I can run Windows at native 100% on same monitor and its much easier on eyes and fonts seem bigger as well. Sort of the problem these days so many people developing are younger with perfect eye sight so they don't concern themselves with things like font sizes. I guess it's up to the user to make changes to settings to address these sort of issues.
Thanks for your suggestions - I think there is another problem going on. There is a fundamental problem with how the mail is being displayed, and I am not allowed to make changes at all. I will follow up with Apple, but thank you for the ideas.
Restoring from a Time Machine backup is lengthy due to the complex ecosystem of permissions and hard links used to create the backup. Only new or changed files are copied in a backup and all of the other files are hard linked.
If one has an up-to-date clone of the hard drive the restoration can be much quicker
When I go to Accessibility --> Display --> Menu size and change Default to Large, it has no visible effect at all, either on the size of the menu bar or the size of the font within it. It does not have any effect even after restarting the system. The setting seems to have no effect at all.
I agree completely with Daniel P. B. Smith. I had exactly the same experience. The Accessibility --> Display --> Menu size and change Default to Large, makes no difference to anything that I can detect.
And reducing the screen resolution would be insane if you are dealing with photographs where you want as much resolution as possible.
This is a shame because we used to be to increase system font size but for reasons which escape my imagination Apple has taken that away.
Hi! I have a new M1 macbook air attached to a 2k monitor and find the resolution painfully smaller to read, I believe in the older OSXs there were settings for this but I can't find anything in Big Sur without making everything really pixelated... please apple bring this back :)
Same. It rebooted and didn't look any different for the effort of having to reopen everything and remind mac (once again) about various app settings. What was the point of that?
Unfortunately, I can't back up to High Sierra, thanks to it being a work computer with mandatory upgrades.
Sorry need to clarify. The above works great, but I'm running an external display and it does have the option for external displays, which means everything is big on my M1 Macbook Air and tiny on my screen, uping the res makes it pixelated, unlike the macbook air screen which scales the font instead.
I'm using a Mac Mini which has no built-in display. I'm using a fairly new Asus VZ27AQ with a 2560x1440 screen, which worked perfectly in every way under Catalina. The screen I'm seeing in System Preferences looks total different from yours. When I select "scaled" I am simply presented with a list of supported resolutions. 2048x1152 is much too big a change, and I don't want to cut my resolution, I want to increase the font and menu bar sizes to be appropriate to the display size. (In the past, the Mac designers built in appropriate sizes and this all "just worked.")
