Battery says it charging but it's not plugged in, but then won't charge

Hi: I have a MacBook Pro 13" that says it is charging without being plugged into any outlet or charger. It has the filled in lightning bolt in the battery sign in the corner, but then when I click on the battery it says "Battery Is Not Charging" and now when I actually plug it into a charger, my laptop will not charge. I've tried both restarting and shutting down the device and each time I turn it back on the same issues ensues. Not to mention I only have 5% left on my laptop to figure this out!

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.15

Thanks for posting in the Apple Support Communities carolb29,

We understand you're having some issues with the charge status, and being able to properly charge your Mac. No worries, we'll be happy to help!

To start, we recommend inspecting the ports on your Mac to ensure they're free of debris. Try connecting the charger to a different port, to see whether there's any change.

If the behavior persists, the following page offers additional steps that often provide a solution to charging issues: If your USB-C power adapter isn't charging your Mac notebook

Another relevant steps that can be taken, is to reset the SMC on your Mac. This is a simple step that doesn't affect items stored on your Mac, and instead relates to a small portion of memory used for hardware components: How to reset the SMC of your Mac

If there's still no change, getting your Mac into the hands of an Apple Certified Tech who can review the device first-hand will be the best next step.
