Hello Downtowner111,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities! We understand your MacBook Air won't connect to the App Store. We're happy to assist you with this.

Since we don't know if you are receiving an error when trying to connect to the app store, let's start by following this article:

If you can't connect to the App Store, iTunes Store, or other Apple services

If this does not address your issue, provide us with the following details:

1- What happens when you try to connect to the App Store?

2- Provide any error messages you may receive.

3- Does this occur on other devices?

Best Regards.

I can empathise fully with you - I was pulling my hair out. I got through to Apple helpline - and as I recall the person got me to reconnect to my own (home) wifi with a new network setting. (I did not allow the computer to connect automatically) - and then it worked. After I connected I updated Big Sur.

It makes no sense to me ... I suspect there was a bug in the early version of Big Sur - but take consolation in knowing that it is fixable.

By the way - it took several calls to the help line.

I’ve had to resort to spending hours on the phone with Apple but I think I am close to a solution. Yay!!

Turns out the issue was with my Apple ID as I didn’t have the issue if I set up a new ID! We’ve had to delete the system information (back up first of course!!), reinstall Big Sur, then transfer the data from the backup disc (takes time).

Can’t really fault the knowledge of the Apple Support team though.

are you definitely sure that you turned the Wi-fi off when doing this AND closed all programs that connect to the internet? Sometimes you’ll have some in the top bar that still connect.

id drag all the files straight to the recycle bin as opposed to the desktop. When you restart the pc after doing this, the system creates new versions of these files and then it “should” connect to the App Store.

don’t turn the Wi-fi back on before you restart.

Also for good measure, I’d delete the Wi-fi connection details completely so that you have to put your Wi-fi password in again when connecting after.

Another thing I noticed was that Big Sur was still updating itself and I had to wait until all updates were installed first.

I am in the same situation with my Mac Book Pro, 15in, 2017.

As well as problem with Safari and the App store, I've noticed other odd behaviour.

I tried reinstalling Big Sur and going through the troubleshooting recommended without any change.

I decided to delete my cache and cooking - but I've found that I cannot delete them. I've tried forcing delete too without success.

I was told it might resolve itself (by support) but there is no way I can get an update - and its soo frustrating.

Any help / advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

OK, tried this fix (thanks Dave2080 for the hint on deleting system files) but still no go. I've tried reinstalling Big Sur, starting in Safe Mode etc but still no fix. It's really frustrating as I need to install the new version of iMovie and I can't until I'm able to sign in to the App Store. It's even more frustrating that I can access the Music store on the Mac and download iMovie on my iPad and iPhone. Clearly something is not right with Big Sur on the Mac. Could it be because it's a 2015 model ie it can't handle Big Sur? If that's the case, how do I restore Catalina??
