David here, I use Safari as my browser and gmail from my dock. I try t0 open Gmail and hear a dong as if a window is open, gmail then opens, I briefly to see my inbox frame but it closes immediately of its own accord. At a loss to know what to do, your suggestions welcomed.

Thanks for coming to Apple Support Communities for help today with Gmail on your Mac. It sounds like app starts to open and then closes on its own.
Is this a third-party Gmail app from the Mac App Store or the Mac Mail app?
If it's a third-party email app, have you checked for updates? It's also possible you'd need to uninstall the app and then reinstall it. How to delete apps on your Mac
If it's the native Mac Mail app with Gmail installed in it, don't follow the previous instructions. Try opening the Mac Mail app while holding down the Shift key.
If that doesn't work, when is the last time you restarted your Mac? Try restarting in safe mode and see if Mail opens. Start up your Mac in safe mode

Thanks for your helpful response. I tried all these to no avail but acted on the suggestion that I update my OS from El Capitan to High Sierra which my rather ancient machine was able to cope with. This has- thankfully restored my GMail and improved the overall operation of my IMac. Thanks gain.
