Driver HP LaserJet 1020 MacOS Big Sur

Yesterday I installed Big Sur on My MacBook Pro 2017. At work is an old HP Laserjet 1020 printer. I installed the printer driver package from the Apple website on Catalina to work. You won't be able to install it on this version. Not support.

Here are some screenshots to help clear up the confusion.

Setup: MacOS BigSur, HP 1020 printer driver installed from previous OS.

  1. Delete the HP 1020 driver from your Machine.
  2. Open preferences/printer.
  3. If the Printer is not connected, clicking the "+" symbol in the window on the left of the Printers & Scanners preferences pane will open the "add printer" dialogue, but the "search bar" will not provide any results when "HP 1020" is entered into the search bar. This is expected behaviour.
  4. Plug HP 1020 printer into a USB port on your Mac.
  5. Turn printer off. Turn printer on.
  6. Open preferences/printer.
  7. Click the "+" symbol in the window on the left of the Printers & Scanners preferences pane
  8. The "add printer" window will open. The printer HP 1020 will be shown
  9. Click on HP 1020.
  10. Under "Use:" click on "choose a driver"..
  11. Click on Select Software
  12. Enter "HP 1020" into the search bar. No results will be shown. This is expected behaviour. HP 1020 is no longer a supported printer.
  13. Clear search bar. Enter "HP 1022"
  14. Select HP LaserJet 1022,1.6.1 .. Click "OK"
  15. Click "Add"
  16. Printer HP LaserJet 1020 will now be set up ready to print. The "kind" will be set to HP LaserJet 1022, 1.6.1
  17. If this has helped, please mark it as "helpful" so that it will be promoted for others to find it.
  18. Hopefully this has prevented the disposal of a few printers. The HP LaserJet 1020 is a simple reliable printer that can be used with Mac OS Big Sur

I will keep it for my PC computers and get a new printer specially for my Mac, but I sincerely think the end is not here yet for the HP 1020/1022 Series. I'd give them several more years still, as they work fine on PCs and barely on my older Mac. Fun. I do understand how many would opt for a new printer and just give up. With COVID-19, I hardly print anymore anyway, as all my classes are now online.

Hi, this is very strange because my 1020 worked with the 1022 driver with Catalina but, as yet (and trying all the helpful tips offered here), there's no way to get it to work with Big Sur. However, I refuse to throw a perfectly good printer away - I agree with you, it's a very well designed piece of kit and been a very reliable and cheap to run and shows no signs of breaking soon. At the moment I'm writing documents on my mac and sending them to myself by email and printing them from an old MBP! Bit of a nuisance but better than throwing yet another working peripheral on the scrap heap. Good luck finding a solution. If I find one I'll let everyone know. Please let me know if there's an easy and not too expensive way to turn the 1020 into a wireless one.

Ahah! Another member of the teaching profession - I retired as an SL after happy 18 years on a 1 year sabbatical! I got my first Hp inkjet there to use on a Mac SE 30 4/40 used for placement database and HyperCard for hops. Times have moved on.

Apple cannot update HP Printer drivers as some seem to expect - Hp prices reflect their longevity. I am very happy with my HP envy air bluetooth wifi and usb with ‘white ink’ deal!...?

good luck

Hello,

One way would be to use a Wi-Fi-to-USB print server connected to the LaserJet 1020. Alternatively, an Ethernet-to-USB print server connected to an Ethernet LAN port of a Wi-Fi router (if the USB printer can be placed near that router). Such devices can be found, for example, from TP-Link and StarTech.

Another method could perhaps involve the old MacBook Pro, and let that computer share the printer. However, one disadvantage is that the MBP then must be on whenever you wish to print.

In any case, the printer driver question for the more modern Mac, running Big Sur, will have to be solved, somehow.

If you have an airport express plug the HP1020 into the USB port. Bonjour will advertise it when you go to install new printer. Select it and add the driver and voila! you have wireless printer. This works with some other routers but I know the airport express works great. And I have been doing this for years.

Another step further is to install handyprint on a Mac. This will allow the same (or any printer on your network) to print from an iOS device. Pretty cool.

FabrioPap, That link worked! When I had tried to install my HP 1020 (as an HP1022) which worked great up to Catalina, I was confronted with the "Volume" not something or other. This time, using right click it went through without a hitch. I am installing this on a new M1 MacBook Air running Big Sur obviously (the only OS that runs on that unit).

I am curious why I had the error initially but may never know. Certainly won't waste much time now that the printer is up and running. Thanks again!

Oops, seems like I'm not allowed to post that link. Oh well.

You need to copy the following folders to /Library/Printers/hp/:

cups (**the only file you need in /cups is "Laserjet.driver", everything else can be deleted/left out)

filter

laserjet

PDEs

Utilities

You need the following file in /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/:

"HP LaserJet 1022.gz"

On the apple site there a folder of HP printer software drivers 5.1 package as pointed out by DHeraud above. Download the file. Restart computer. Connect printer and start it. In the printer scanner, choose add printer. In the select software setting choose HP LaserJet 1022 software. It is compatible with 1020. It worked for me. Hope it solves your problem as well.
