Driver HP LaserJet 1020 MacOS Big Sur

Yesterday I installed Big Sur on My MacBook Pro 2017. At work is an old HP Laserjet 1020 printer. I installed the printer driver package from the Apple website on Catalina to work. You won't be able to install it on this version. Not support.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 11.0

Here are some screenshots to help clear up the confusion.

Setup: MacOS BigSur, HP 1020 printer driver installed from previous OS.

Delete the HP 1020 driver from your Machine.
Open preferences/printer.
If the Printer is not connected, clicking the "+" symbol in the window on the left of the Printers & Scanners preferences pane will open the "add printer" dialogue, but the "search bar" will not provide any results when "HP 1020" is entered into the search bar. This is expected behaviour.
Plug HP 1020 printer into a USB port on your Mac.
Turn printer off. Turn printer on.
Open preferences/printer.
Click the "+" symbol in the window on the left of the Printers & Scanners preferences pane
The "add printer" window will open. The printer HP 1020 will be shown
Click on HP 1020.
Under "Use:" click on "choose a driver"..
Click on Select Software
Enter "HP 1020" into the search bar. No results will be shown. This is expected behaviour. HP 1020 is no longer a supported printer.
Clear search bar. Enter "HP 1022"
Select HP LaserJet 1022,1.6.1 .. Click "OK"
Click "Add"
Printer HP LaserJet 1020 will now be set up ready to print. The "kind" will be set to HP LaserJet 1022, 1.6.1

Ahah! Another member of the teaching profession - I retired as an SL after happy 18 years on a 1 year sabbatical! I got my first Hp inkjet there to use on a Mac SE 30 4/40 used for placement database and HyperCard for hops. Times have moved on.

Apple cannot update HP Printer drivers as some seem to expect - Hp prices reflect their longevity. I am very happy with my HP envy air bluetooth wifi and usb with ‘white ink’ deal!...?

Where is this so-called "HP driver package" pray tell?

Catalina > System Preferences… > Printers & Scanners > + > Add sees the HP LaserJet 1020 and says "Software for this printer isn't available from Apple. Contact the printer's manufacturer for the latest software."

then Chose a Driver… > Select Software… > Printer Software offers nothing older than HP LaserJet 1200

with the same failure mode: MacOS says it's printing with progress reports and all but the printer remains idle.

I have the same issue but mine is an HP 1022. I still have 3 toner cartridges and hate to throw it away.

You managed to install the HP Laserjet 1020 on Big Sur. Please tell me, did you update your system to Big Sur or did you perform a clean install?

Same Problem, the previous versions of driver are not even reinstalling.Also, the error says that present driver was not installed correctly.
