iMessage no notification automatically marked as read

Hi all!

For the past week my phone is automatically marking messages from one contact as read even though I receive no notification for this. I watched it happened as well... screen lights up, no notification comes through (including on lock screen, notification center, or banner), open messages, see a new message that's been marked as if I've read it... I have no clue how to fix this.

Here's what I've done already:

  • Turn off/on message notifications
  • Sign out/in of imessage
  • Deleted conversation with specific contact that this is happening with
  • Turned off iMessage forwarding
  • Force restart iPhone
  • Fully restored iPhone

iPhone XS Max running ios 14.2

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hello treygarz,

We understand that you're not receiving notifications from one contact. There can be a few causes, so let's look into this together.

First, review the settings here and be sure it isn't set to Deliver Quietly: Use notifications on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

Additionally, check and be sure that this contact isn't blocked. Here's how to check: Block phone numbers, contacts, and emails on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
