My Ipod classic works when plugged in via the lightening plug, works with headphones and it charges via usb cable. It will not work via usb plugged into the laptop to sync or into the car stereo for playback. I have tried all the YouTube suggestions without any success.

If you put the device in disk mode does it show up in Windows Explorer? It may be worth checking the docking port for fluff or trying a different cable. Different pins are used for charging and data transfer so the fact that it charges may not tell the whole story.
