My system updated just fine... all my software seems to be working other than iPhoto is not supported on Big Sur... however I do have a problem.... one of my attached discs are not readable.... they were yesterday before updating to Big Sur...

This doesn't solve the issue. Why can't I read my USB drive from Big Sur? I don't have an older Mac to use.
I have this problem too and would like to know the answer. I have a microSD card that I use with my drone. It was readable before Big Sur. Afterwards my mac doesn't read it, and I don't want to lose my drone footage on the card.
Initialize means erase, so you don't want to go there. Any other Mac that you can access that data from?
