Safari 14 on Big Sur: How to prevent a webpage from automatically reloading because it was using significant memory?

In previous versions of Safari, only a message banner would pop up informing me that a webpage was taking up significant memory. Under Safari 14, the browser now automatically reloads the webpage without my permission, and there seems to be no way to turn this function off.

I am unable to pause lectures, type notes in another app, and then return to play the recorded lecture without the webpage reloading, causing me to lose my place in the lecture. For my purposes, Safari has become unusable because of this new, automatic reloading. I preferred a message banner appearing on top of the webpage so I could reload at my convenience.

Is there a fix that I can do through Terminal to turn this function off? What can I do?

I had the same problem when watching Disney+ I tried a few different things but finally seemed to have stopped it happening.

I monitored the memory use of the Disney+ tab in Activity monitor.

Under safari > Settings for this website - I turned off "Content Blockers"

I am running Ghostry Lite - so I "Trusted the site"

I am running AdBlock - so I added www.disneyplus.com to the sites allowed to show Ads.

If I do the above and play Disney+ in a separate window the memory usage fluctuates but doesn't grow like it used to. Previously I would get the warning when the tab used around 2.0GB memory. Now it stays between 650Mb-850Mb

i'm a little late to this thread, but i have not had any of the difficulties being reported across these five pages (with zoom). there IS, however, a big difference between my situation and everyone else. i'm not accessing my zoom through any browser. i use the zoom app for mac. i'v never had issues using any of the features in zoom. (screen sharing, recording, etc.) it even makes it a two click option to go from the notification e-mail to the meeting.

(i get no compensation from zoom. nor am i affiliated with them.)

Hi,

I think you have mis understood the issue. The Zoom App on Mac does not allow you to review recordings that were not made by you, on your device. We are talking about viewing zoom video recordings that are usually on links at your institution. When you click on the link you get a player which plays the recordings made by the professor or whoever. This is what's causing massive restarts. I have this issue several times a day on Safari.

and, who is we? i can't seem to see ANYTHING about zoom in the original poster's question. it appears that you are among the people who have hijacked this thread and now expect me to adapt to your issue. why not start YOUR OWN thread to ask about recording zoom?

Well then.

Its very interesting that you got all up in your feelings.

Actually the issue is pertinent to this thread because the issues that are occurring are causing the webpage atomically reloading because it was using significant memory. So I think they are in the right place, and you need to settle down.

Secondly, no one expects you to adapt to anything. Last I checked no one asked you any questions. I only responded to give you context.

Very inconvenient for online classes -- would love if this was fixed. My laptop is brand new and running Big Sur 11.2.1 (just updated to see if it would fix the issue..) I also tried clearing history and cache, but since it is only a few weeks of data I had low hopes of that working, and alas, it is still refreshing in a very stifling and unrefreshing way.

Halliday considering this is a thread about an error message in Safari you can correctly assume I'm running this through the browser Safari. Considering the 6 pages of replies also mentions it several times, you'd also be correct to assume Safari is the only browser on macOS that gives these messages, so yes, a different browser would fix the problem but a different browser would give me other issues I don't have with Safari.

I am having this issue too. I am working on a project in Jupyter Lab, a local host that runs iPython in Safari. It is no surprise that what I am doing uses significant memory, it is a necessary evil of what I am working on. This feature is totally disrupting my workflow and has forced me to switch my default browser to Firefox for the time being. It is always annoying when developers program applications to make unilateral decisions like this without any consideration of what users might need from the application.

Running Big Sur 11.2.2 on a 2016 MBP (13", Two Thunderbolt 3 Ports)

Big Sur has totally disrupted my workflow and I am unable to find any solution to stop this automatic reloading. This feature was a very dumb move, a notification to let users make their own decisions was perfectly fine on its own, they did not need to do anything more.
