Safari 14.0.1 File Selection button not working

I have a standard web form which has a file selector form field. This has worked for well over 10 years as it's the standard UI presented by Safari. Just noticed today after Safari upgraded to 14.0.1 (on the latest Mojave) that the button is dead: clicking does nothing. This same form continues to work in Chrome. Anyone else see this and have a workaround?

No sign of any action from Apple about this. bazaarsoft's comment suggests they may not fix it.

If nothing has happened by the beginning of next week I shall probably re-install Mojave OS. I hope that will get me back to an earlier version of Safari. It's surprisingly easy to do this if you have a good enough internet connection. See https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204904 Follow instructions for Intel processor. That page refers to re-installing Big Sur, but note that if you start up the computer holding ⌘-R to enter MacOS Recovery it will offer to re-install the version of MacOS you are currently using, i.e. Mojave

Yes, this is caused by Safari 14.0.1, and not fixed by 14.0.2 It only affects Mojave users, who should not be being prompted to install these updates at all. It is not caused by the Security Updates which are safe to install.

You can find files first and drag&drop them onto upload buttons but those buttons will not open the Finder.

The only solution is to re-install MacOS Mojave. You can then update Safari to version 14.0 (which works OK), and do all the security updates

I found an alternative way to get Safari 14.0 back.

I downloaded the original Safari 14 .pkg installer from: https://mac.filehorse.com/download-safari/16044/

I then had to turn off System Integrity Protection and use Charlesoft's Pacifist to install the .pkg then I turned SIP back on.

Just running the .pkg installer on its own doesn't work as I think the installer must check to see if there's a newer version already installed.

That is not a practical solution for those people who are unable to upgrade, or do not want to upgrade for whatever reason (hardware or software compatibilities, personal choice etc.)

Also, installing a whole new version of macOS just to fix one major bug with a single application seems a little extreme. Far better that Apple fix the problem they caused.

In the meantime, there are a couple of solutions to get back a functioning Safari v14.0 in this thread.

It's not the Security Updates - they are safe to install. It's that in any version of Safari newer than 14.0, clicking the upload button fails to open the Finder for you to select the file you want to upload.

Note that if you find the file you want to upload in the Finder first, you can then drag it to the upload button on the Safari screen and that should still work.

When I wrote "security update" was because after I did it, the problem arose. It definitely could be something different, though. Something that has not been fixed in the latest Safari release (end of December)

As for your solution, I checked again right now, but I can confirm that it does not work for me at all.

2 examples:

Blogger: if I click "insert image from your computer" and I try to move the image into the "image window", the result I have is the image displayed in a safari tab but NOT uploaded.

eBay: I cannot even click the +image button in my draft simply because the it is not responsive. That's to say that I cannot even try to move an image from my desktop to "image window"

In reply to mauhey67 - the problem we're all discussing is exactly that - the upload button doesn't do anything when you click it in Safari 14.0.1 or 14.0.2. One solution is to find the file you want in the Finder and drag it to the upload button (the thing you normally click to find a file, which doesn't work), not the upload window where you want it to appear.

However, it seems from ravenby's recent post that Safari 14.0.3 will be appearing in Software Update Preferences soon, and that should bring the upload button function back.

Thanks, yes, I confirm that file upload works normally in Safari 14.0.3. Phew!

From this and the Mojave Security Update fiasco last year we learn that Apple do fix these bugs eventually, but Software Updates have a long lead time, so it takes two or three updates before they achieve it. Users have to cope with the errors somehow in the meantime
