iPhone 12 mini duplicates each contact number

I just got the 12 mini (also have an 11) and I can't figure out or find on the web why, each time I add a contact (either by importing from Gmail contacts or directly typing one in) I get duplicate phone numbers. I only put in one number for the contact, but when I'm finished and, say, want to initiate a call by touching the "call" icon, nothing happens. When I long-press the icon, a dropdown appears with two identical numbers (sometimes with identical "type"; e.g. mobile, home). Again, the contact contains only ONE phone number, promise.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Hello jeremy:

Thank you for posting and trying to help me out. One of the only options you left out is "maybe it's an Apple bug". As often happens, it was, the latest SW update for the 12 mini fixed it.

Hello nlk10010 and welcome to Apple Support Communities. It appears you are having some difficulty with duplicate info in Contacts on your iPhone.

What is iCloud Contacts? - Apple Support

The info in that resource may prove helpful. It's important to remember that the Contacts app on an iOS device is simply a client. e.g., It displays data held elsewhere.

The actual data is associated with an email account. This might be your iCloud account or it could be a Google or Yahoo or some other account that supports contacts. You can check this for non-iCloud accounts on a device running iOS 14 by going to Settings > Mail > Accounts and then tapping the specific account and checking to see if the Contacts option is enabled.

Duplicate info like this is often caused by there being more than one account that is storing contacts data. For example: If you have both iCloud and Google accounts both storing contacts data and you have the same contact in both accounts, the Contacts app will try to include the data from both records under one unified setting (in this case, the person's name).

You can avoid a lot of duplicate info issues by only having one account with contacts data associated with it.
