problem with iMessage activation with phone number but not e-mail addresses

I recently got an iPhone 12 Pro Max.

In iMessages, I noticed that several e-mail addresses have check boxes, but my cell phone number itself isn't checked. It says "activation unsuccessful."

I've tried the steps on the support page, restarting the iPhone, checking and unchecking iMessage and FaceTime, signing in and out with my Apple ID on the iPhone, changing the password for Apple ID.

It turns out that I ended up calling Apple. The initial advisor gave the usual party line about giving it some time to activate (24-48 hours). I asked if there was some issue with my cell phone number, and the advisor said no, and to give it 24-48 hours and how this process could be related to it being a new phone.

I then asked to speak to a senior advisor. The senior advisor looked and could see that my cell phone number was not checked but that the e-mail addresses were checked. And then a minute or two later, the cell phone number became checked.

This may be magical thinking on my part, but it's almost as if the act of looking at this setting on Apple's end triggered something, though the advisor states that he did not actually change any setting.

So it's theoretically possible that this would have happened on its own with enough time, but the timing of it related to the Apple call seems more than coincidental.

So now iMessages is working as it should with my cell phone number.

Thank you very much for responding! Happy to hear it’s working for you. I was given the same 24-48 hour speech today... Funny thing is when I put the SIM card back into my iPhone 11 Pro. iMessage activates perfectly with my number and email but in the 12 Pro it stays stuck on verifying. Lets hope it takes 1-2 days also. Really annoying. I found many people with the same issue just by searching on google today. I’ll call Apple on Monday or Tuesday if it still not working.

To provide more detail, I had an analogous issue where the phone number was checked on the iPhone 11 Pro Max (with the old SIM card that was no longer active). I've noticed this issue more lately where I'm getting iMessages from e-mail addresses rather than phone numbers from some of colleagues, and this is in the past several days. And not sure if it's related to the cell phone carrier. I'm using AT&T.
