Does anyone know how to reduce the size of the toolbar for application windows? With Big Sur it has grown and now consumes more space which reduces real estate for the main content of the application. I would like to reduce the height, and even the size of the icons but cannot figure out where this is done.

I will, but I am pretty sure it is really easy to do yourself by simply opening Big Sur. The red arrows show the top and bottom.
I have the same issue. Apple support online chat and phone were unable to help me. It seems like this is part of the Big Sur upgrade and not adjustable. They gave me the website for product feedback, so I hope that might be useful. https://www.apple.com/feedback/
If that the toolbar in a Safari window? Mine is a bit bigger because I've reduced the screen resolution in the System/Displays/Display preference pane. I've reduced it one step towards the Larger Text end:
However, it might not be as advantageous on a laptop as on a 27" screen.
