64GB iphone to 256GB iphone transfer error message

I had a 64GB iphone 8Plus and now have a 256GB 12 Pro iphone and keep getting the message "Transfer Cannot be Completed" because there is not enough storage upon trying to set up the 12 Pro. How can I resolve without backing up to laptop or cloud? I have unpaired my watch already and that didn't help.

Yes - restarted both. Nada. Made sure both are on same iOS version. Tried again... no dice. Chat sessions & Calls to ‘support’ while nice people, are useless- got disconnected from level 2 - very convenient timing. Super frustrating. Spent 2 hours troubleshooting. Ridiculous.


gonna HAVE TO pay for iCloud upgrade to back up, since I have a PC for my laptop and don’t want iTunes on it. That’s a great ‘gotcha’ Apple!!! Then have to downgrade back since I don’t want them owning all my photos, etc.... aaaarrrrrgh.
