Same here. After updating Safari to 14.0.1 I was unable to upload any files. Called Apple support on 11/16/2020. They had me on hold for 45 minutes. When they finally connected me with a technician, I was on the line with him for another 40 minutes and resolved nothing. He suggested that I install Chrome or Firefox. Unbelievable, Apple installs a crappy update, they can’t fix it, and their solution is to install someone else’s software.

The following fix worked for someone on my team. I am on the same Safari Version, 14.0.2 (15610.3.7.1.10, 15610), Catalina 10.15.7, but I do not have the issue and cannot test it directly.

1)Enable the develop menu from Safari->Preferences->Advanced->Show Develop menu in menu bar (a checkbox)

2)From the newly visible Develop menu bar dropdown, enable Disable Local File Restrictions

Hope it helps!

I think the setting being referred to above is "Enable Content Blockers", but it doesn't help me (macOS 10.14.6 / Safari 14.0.1)

What's odd about this problem is that some sites seem to allow file browsing while others don't. A good site to test against is outlook.office365.com - this site hasn't allowed me to browse for a local file (to attach to an e-mail) for about a month now, although drag & drop works fine (as a workaround)

Has anyone tried the above with Safari 14.0.1 or 14.0.2 on 10.14.6? Does that solve the issue? If it doesn't work, I'm curious to know if enabling the Allow JavaScript from Apple Events found in the Develop menu could help...

I for myself restored Mojave from the Recovery partition, and then updated all but Safari 14.0.1 and 14.0.2, and the upload functionality is working again. That in turn broke my Xcode and MacPorts installation, but reinstalling the Command Line Tools made them work properly too...

This is a code issue between Mojave and Safari. In Mojave 10.14.6 and Safari 14.0.1 and 14.0.2. This first started when Safari 14.0.1 came out. I started noticing the inability to attach files of any type to emails. I was able to confirm that in Firefox, attachments worked without issue. I then thought I would wait for Apple to update soon. This was my hope when Safari 14.0.2 came out but No Joy!. So, I then called Apple and the usual diagnostic trials began from checking user settings to reloading Mojave. Following a hour of reloading Mojave, all was back to normal but when you reload Mojave it takes Safari back to 14.0 Then a couple days later the "Update Message" came up and I thought OK....WRONG!!!!!! 14.0.1 loaded and no more attachments via file selection. Then update Safari with 14.0.2 and still no ability to select attachments. You can drag and drop but cannot select and attach.

Like many folks I have not moved out of Mojave because of 32 bit software I don't want to move away from.

I hope Apple will get going on this as their help desks are wasting a lot of time walking people through reloading Mojave. Seeing people on this forum wondering why this issue has not been resolved is a bit frustrating. Once again we are at the mercy of Apple to either hope for a solution our spend a lot of money to either upgrade computers or purchase expensive software. Planned corporate obsolescence!!!

So I tried drag and drop again for uploading files, and I was able to upload a file of 400kb to a Gmail email and also to a collaborative work site. I think the key is that you have to be precise about exactly where you drop the file (ie precisely inside the box that appears that says "drop files here").

So I guess I'll do that for now instead of reinstalling Mojave. And wait to see if Apple fixes the issue.

If the issue is related to Adobe Flash Player, as some have suggested, surely it have to be fixed soon, since Flash Player is going away and sites will have to alter their function accordingly.

Unfortunately, they are not so trivial. When you are dealing with a government site and realize that the button to attach a file does not work you begin to feel nervous. You try it several times. Finally you try it with another browser and it works. Anxiety and several minutes lost. Then you have to learn how to use another browser, move the bookmarks... Not something simple for a semiold person. Not what you expected (in past) from Apple. really, the Apple experience has become a nightmare lately. And when you see that this is something that Apple don't care about at all... Well.

I have the same issue. I did not notice 'when' it started happening, in relation to an update, but yes... back around the same time that you posted this question, the "Attach Files" button in Gmail quit working AND the "Select Files" button for uploading in YouTube quit working. I have still been able to 'attach' and 'upload' but I have to "drag and drop" files rather than select them through the navigation window.

My wife recently had a similar issue on her Mac. I explained my issue/work around to her, and she told me that somebody suggested trying Chrome instead of Safari. Today I downloaded Chrome, and using it the "attach" and "select" buttons work just like they should. So, it must be a Safari issue.

I noticed this issue the other day whilst trying to upload a document on bt webmail. Thought it was a bit odd, but didn’t realise there was an issue at the time. It was only today when my son was trying to upload his schoolwork online and nothing happened when he clicked add files from computer (strangely add file from one drive and google drive work). I managed to drag and drop, but thought it was my Mac being glitchy. Restarted my Mac to no avail, then found this forum (makes me feel better that it’s not just me).

I have sent feedback to Apple, but doubt they will do anything as they want people to upgrade to Big Sur. I’m nervous about reinstalling Mojave, as have had nothing but trouble since I got this Mac (never had this much trouble with my old Mac).

I like Safari as bookmarks and tabs work over all devices. Perhaps I’ll bite the bullet and reinstall, but does anyone know if I have to reinstall apps, files and mail settings?

Thanks

I also had issues with uploading files on Safari 14.01, so when the next release of 14.02 came out quickly upgraded, but the problem still occurs, I can still not upload files from Safari 14.01 which is very, very annoying!! Google Chrome is fine, no problem.

I would have upgraded to Catalina, but can find nowhere to upload it from? Big Sur is tempting, but has had its own problems in its infancy, let alone the 35GB space required to run it! Apple, please fix this problem with Safari the next security update!!!
