Need to get Big Sir to download on newer iMac. Get software to download after 6 hours, each time, however an error at the end prevents going further. Have to restart the download each time. The error seems to change each time. The latest indicates not meeting Gatekeeper Policy. Need way to get by this error.

Ended up Support Chat. Solution: As recommended by Apple, started iMac in Recovery mode. Reloaded in most current OS. It took half the normal download time and downloaded without incident. Big Sur running fine.
Well, your profile does show that you are running 10.11 - it shows right under your post. With no other information from you, it could easily have had something to do with it.
Do you have Gatekeeper or SIP disabled? Do you have any third party AV, cleaning, or similar sofware installed? Do you have a VPN installed - it is recommended to turn that off while downloading.
Your profile shows you are running 10.11 - I do not believe that you can upgrade directly from 10.11. Please post specific details.
Contrary to your post, the most current Catalina upgrade is on the Mac. That is no5 the issue.
