Watch update on iPhone stuck on “checking for update”

I have reviewed all the suggestions on this site to fix the problem. Nothing works. I have restarted both phone and watch multiple times. I have Checked to see if wifi is on - it is. I have tried to delete the Watch app from my phone so I could reinstall and it moves it, will not delete the app. I saw a suggesting about deleting the update file but there is nothing to delete. I can’t update the watch on the watch itself because it is trying to connect to my phone. The phone and app aren’t communicating and the app is stuck in the endless loop of checking for update. What next?
