For all of those with ATT accounts, I had to get a 'secure mail key from ATT and use it during the email account setup process where it asked for password. Overall, it was a very frustrating process and I was shocked when it finally started working. It really should not be this confusing. I did the following.

1. Got the secure mail key by logging into ATT account and going to profile and requesting the key.

2. Deleted existing yahoo/att email account from iPhone

3. Adding the new 'other' email account using the steps is the article, https://www.serversettings.email/att.net-email-server-settings-imap.php#iphone

*** use email key where it asks for password

Thank you to all that posted some information on the topic because there does not appear to be a 100% clear answer for all situations.

I had this problem for YEARS. The solution has been posted but it was hard to find. It fixed the problem on my husband’s and my iPhones and both our iPads.

1. Sign in and go to the AOL Account security page. You can do this by signing on to AOL from a computer.

2. Click Generate app password or Manage app passwords.

3. Select your app from the drop down menu and click Generate.

4. Follow the instructions below the password.

- Be sure to enter the password into your app without any spaces.

5. Click Done.

6. Use this app password and your email address to sign in to your email app.

I have the same issue. I can access webmail on my iPhone and on my MacBook Pro with the same password the mail App says is missing Going round in circles with the iPhone. They need to sort this out soon.

“They” means your email provider. Apple has nothing to do with your email authentication, the mail app simply forwards what you enter to your provider without even looking at it. And your email provider may not want the same password on your iPhone, especially if it is AOL, Yahoo, or any of the dozens of email providers that contract with AOL or Yahoo to manage their mail service; these all require an application-specific password that will be different from your webmail password. Go to your provider's website; they will have a support page specifically for setting up email on an iPhone.
