Mac OS Big Sur Photos bug?

Recently updated iMac Retina 2019 to Big Sur. Initially I could not get connection to Time Capsule (wifi external disc) - helped when restarted Mac.

I decided to use Photos to do some retouching (Apple proudly advertises new Photos app in Big Sur) as GIMP 2.10.14 (Open Source Image Editor) stopped working properly after OS update. First couple minutes I was doing great retouching old photos, than some green screen flashes started now and than, some green patches started to appear in places I was retouching, and when I tried to undo some last retouching points (Cmd Z) the Photos app stopped working. I could force quit Photos but lost all recent retouching and had to start from scratch. Restarting system didn't solve the problem - every time I use Photos editor for retouching photos I have the same problems - slow response (have to wait a while for a small area being retouched) after couple minutes of editing, green flashes and patches, and finally very often need to force quit.

Got this as well, exactly the same as you're describing after Big Sur update, have already tried reinstall of Big Sur, also boot time is unfathomably slow 3-4 minutes before it's operational. Reinstall didn't fix either problem. I've tonight created a new account and after a small amount of testing (exporting-importing photos afresh) thought it had worked. Proceeded to transfer all of my music, re add missing artwork. Set up mail and import 20,000 photos plus, only for problem to reoccur.

Please don't waste your time trying these resolutions as they don't appear to work. Looks like Big Sur quite simply introduced a bug we're all suffering with. It seems to be worse with newer larger JPEGs, doesn't seem to do it with older smaller files.

Hello Tiger651,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!

It is our understanding from your post that when using the Photos app in macOS Big Sur to retouch some photos the app shows green where you have retouched the photo and the app crashes. We recommend testing the issue while your Mac is in safe mode.  The following articles have the steps you will need to test the issue in safe mode:

How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

"Safe mode prevents your Mac from loading certain software as it starts up, including login items, system extensions not required by macOS, and fonts not installed by macOS. It also does a basic check of your startup disk, similar to using First Aid in Disk Utility. And it deletes some system caches, including font caches and the kernel cache, which are automatically created again as needed."

Best Regards.

What about Gimp didn't work. It seems to work for me but I haven't yet mastered all of the features that I used in Photoshop.

As a test launch Photos with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it? (This tells us if the problem is limited to your current library or is more wide spread)

If the new library works OK then go back and open your original library and try again. Any improvement?

I’ve had exactly the same problem so reinstalled Mac Big Sur, first problem I then had was Big Sur wouldn’t accept my iCloudid with some 15 tries I now find that only at login stage do you have to ad a special code Apple has sent you on the end .... yes the end of your password ... no rhyme or reason and just apple being ridiculous as usual (think changing calendar on iPhone how frustrating to make an appointment) and back to Big Sur wouldn’t allow me to connect to my airport time capsule to import my backups. Just waiting for the last of three lots of 90 minutes for Big Sur to load so I can see if the retouching works in photo now or if I’ve wasted another 2 days of my life I won’t get back because of tricky little green apple. Oh yeah has anybody noticed Apple has gone back to it’s original flat face design after all these years ‘what’s old is new again’ (looks like it’s been drawn freehand by a child who has then taken a naughty byte out of it. Memories

So after wasting yet another 2 days of my life with a completely blank canvas Mac boook pro Mac Big Sur photo editing doesn’t work properly. It freezes all the time, it decides when it will and will not retouch and the actual photo your working on bumps around the screen top, left, right and bottom when ever tut feels like it causing for the last action you’ve just undertaken to land on the screen and picture somewhere that you didn’t want it to (that’s if the action even worked of course). Oh dear Apple I think you have a LEMON on your hands or is it GREEN or ORANGE just like the spots that appear on the screen whenever!

now I have to reinstall Mowave or what ever it was called. Such a frigg’n waste of time, my entire weekend.

Next, log into another vanilla admin user account, Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac and see if the problem persists. (This tells us if the problem is limited to your user account or is system wide).
