Thanks for you answer, to do it that way I would have to download one photo at a time and it would be very time consuming. I should rephrase the question - how to download/export Google photo albums to Photos. I requested a download from Google and have what Google is calling 'Takeout' - but not sure what to do next.
What's a "takeout"? and as that's a Google feature, best to ask them. But in any event, sooner or later you end up with a folder of images on your machine and you import the contents of that. The journey from Google to your Machine is one for you and Google to figure out.

There's no special trick. Download the images from Google Photos to your computer then import them to Photos - and I assume it's Photos you mean, not iPhoto. Makes no difference in any event.
