Three Thoughts on This:

• System Cache:

Boot into Safe Mode [Hold Down: shift key upon boot and log in] and then wait 30 seconds and restart the Mac, logging in as usual.

• Safari:

When is the Last Time You Clearing your Temporary Internet Files (Cookies & Cache) of Safari?:

Cookies perform remembrance of certain site-entered data. Whereas Cache keeps a snapshot of the last time you visited a site.  Use this Link: Clearing History and Cache - Apple Communities

A. Clear The History:

1. Go To: History Menu
2. Select: “Clear History...”
3. Select: “all history” 
4. Click: Clear History

B. Clear The Cache:

1. Unhide: The Develop Menu
2. Go To: Develop menu
3. Select: Empty Caches

Inform Apple of This:

Do your Part: Seeing "I have this question" has a count of 12, this seems to be a well known issue, as of this reply. So, inform Apple of this. Apple wont get back to you directly, but the more feedback they receive on this, the more they will know what needs to be fixed, and how it should be fixed. So, report this to Apple, letting them know how you have troubleshot this thus far - both successfully and unsuccessfully.

Report this as a Bug to Apple:

1. Go Here: Feedback - Safari - Apple
2. Select: "Bug Report" for the "Feedback Type"
3. Proceed from there as necessary.

I have same issue.

I only opened four tabs, Salesforce, Gmail and Yahoo Finance, after 2hours later, Memory was about 60G...

And it crashed couple times after hours of using, not even heavy tasks...

Apple, please fix it

I have discovered, that when I watch a video via Safari, uploaded to google drive my kernel_task memory usage is getting really big. Another activity doesn't lead up to the same effect, it works normally.

I have the same issue... :( I'm managing tasks in asana (I have the same error using our corporative app with chat) and the browser die. It show a black screen saying "There has been a problem" and button to reload page. I push button and again the same error...

Before update Big Sur all works fine... I like new interface but with this issues... not cool

I'm using chrome for now, plz Apple fix it... I want back safari

I might resolved my issue.

I disabled Rakuten Cash Back extensions and after that, everything is good now.

I am sorry I could not be more helpful on your problems, maybe uncheck all extensions unless you need to use them then, hope this could help.

I'm new to Apple, I had Catalina for about 3 months before updating to "Big Sur" where I immediately got pretty frequent "Out of memory errors". As a 20 year "windows" user I assumed closing the window exited the app! Not so apparently, Today I noticed if I select the app in the toolbar I have the option from the drop down menu to "Exit app(Safari, messages, etc). If I do this the black dot under the icon in the main taskbar(Bottom) disappears suggesting the app is closed? Might be a way forward?

Do you know of any way that we can get a bug tracker or anything on this issue? I would just love to know that Apple is working on it at least.

I am having the same issue, safari is using 47GB while only 4 tabs open. And this happened on M1 MacMini!
