Bluetooth Mouse Choppy When Using Airpods with iPhone

Ever since updating to Big Sur when I'm listening to my second gen AirPods connected to my iPhone 12 Pro Max my bluetooth mouse connected to my 16" MacBook has choppy movement.

Connecting my MacBook to the same AirPods and playing back audio, there is no lag with the bluetooth mouse.

Anyone else seeing this?

Mouse is a Logitech Anywhere 2S

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 11.0

Na, this started with Big Sur. When running PacketLogger I do see some errors that seem to happen when the stuttering happens but this for sure started with Big Sur. So Catalina handled errors better maybe?

Note, in Catalina I had turned off Hand Off due to the same mouse stuttering problem so it's always been off for me. But the previous mouse lag was only when connected to my Caldigit TB docking station.

Here's what I think might have fixed this. I've had solid mouse for 15 minutes while playing audio from the iPhone to AirPods.

  • Turn off Hand Off on the Mac: Settings / General / Allow Handoff (turn off)
  • Connect the Mac to the AirPods, now under Bluetooth / AirPods you will see the Options button. Go to options and change Connect to This Mac Automatically to When Last Connected to This Mac. If you don't see Options button your Mac isn't connected to the AirPods.
