M1 Mac Mini initial set up.

Hi, I am about to purchase a new M1 Mac Mini. I only possess a wireless keyboard and mouse (supplied with my late 2009 iMac). Will I need to obtain a wired keyboard and mouse for the initial set up procedure? Many thanks for any help.

Best to get a new kB-mouse as the Bluetooth version on your existing is obsolete and insecure. So, it’s not just a bumpy start you need to be concerned about, but bumpy ride throughout if you don’t get a new one.

I would get the Magics by Apple and the Trackpad instead of the mouse. Worth every credit card penny. Enjoy...

FWIW I have an old 2009 era Magic Mouse and 2019 Magic Keyboard (that can be also used in wired mode via Lightning cable). I have never needed wired ones when setting up Mac mini 2018 from scratch. But I do have a cheap wired mouse in the household and wired-only keyboard in the neighbourhood.

(Very seldom in regular use I have grabbed a wired mouse when some poorly shielded USB device intermittently disconnect Bluetooth connection and I don't want to keep the mouse so very close to the Mac to keep it connected).

I did have significant problems setting up the Mini, as far as bluetooth goes. It wouldn't recognize my apple magic mouse and keyboard, and even after I put in a logitech unifying connector into the mini's usb port, it wouldn't work. But I have a Anker usb-c hub, and connected that to the Mini's usb-c port, and put in the usb logitech dongle to that, and everything worked and afterwords I was able to get it to see my apple mouse and keyboard. It was suggested I was having usb interference and that was why the unifying usb connector worked in the Anker hub.

Now everything is fine, but for awhile I was stumped.

So now things are fine.
