Trying to empty trash on MacBook Air.

Did you remove files from an external drive to trash bin? If yes, reconnect that external drive again and you should be able to empty your trash bin.
If it has nothing to do with an external drive, reboot your Mac in Safe mode (holding the shift key while rebooting). It can take several minutes to boot in Safe mode. Try to empty trash again. Afterwards, reboot again in normal mode
I have rebooted it using the shift button with no luck. When I click on the Finder thing the Empty Trash is not highlighted and I think that must have something to do with it. Any suggestions would be so appreciated.
Don't look for the trash bin in Finder. Look at the Dock at the bottom of the screen. On the very right sight you should see the trash bin. If you can't open it, try right-clicking on it and then left-click on 'open'
Thank you so much for your help. When I click on the trash basket, I get open in dark type and under, empty trash in light type. I click open and trash comes up but in light type so it does not work when I click on it. I hope that is understandable!
