Files "disappear" from a mounted external hard drive
I have a MyBook 3TB external drive (Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format) that recently has been behaving oddly. The drive is mounted to my iMac (27-inch, Late 2013), running Catalina 10.15.7).
Occasionally when I open the drive with Finder the folders and files are not visible. And Get Info shows that files are indeed there and taking up space. Disk Utility First Aid report no errors on drive. They are not marked as hidden files. The only way I can get these files to "come back" is to unmount/mount the drive or reboot the iMac.
Online posts on this topic are old, and many suggest a failing hard drive. So I purchased a new MyBook 4TB (formatted APFS) and the same problem occurred within an hour of putting files on the new drive.
Both drives are powered and connected directly into my iMac.
So is my problem the iMac? ? Thanks
