To Defrag or Not to Defrag

  1. Is there a conclusive, definitive, and logical "rule" regarding defragging a MacBook Pro (15 inch late 2011) hard-drive?
  2. If defrag is helpful, what is the SOP without downloading a software enabling app from "So-and-So Solutions".
  3. If defrag is not helpful. Are there any fix-options available? Client currently has original hard drive and 8GB RAM.

Reasons -

  • Slow start-up,
  • Slow app opening,
  • Slow web performance,
  • Frequent and extended "pin-wheel of death",
  • MacBook Pro is 9-years old.

Appreciate any input!

Thank you.
