How can I update my iMac to the latest software?

I have a iMac 27" and has the old software. Will i be able to update to the latest software? If so what are the correct steps on making this happen? I'm not sure on which iMac it is but i do have the model number. I will be looking forward on your response. Thank you!

Don't feel you need to apologize. Our mission here is to help each other. If I am understanding you correctly, you have already done the download, but it will not install. If that is the case, your download file is likely corrupted. Did you use Wi-Fi? Corruption often happens with Wi-Fi. You should do it via a wired Ethernet connection. These files are too large for Wi-Fi. If necessary, temporarily move your computer to where your modem/router is to connect it. If that is not possible, then you may have to do several downloads to get a clean one that will install. Be sure to stay off the internet during the download process and use Safari.

I currently have the OS X Yosemite installed, not sure if I am able to install High Sierra. I really thank you for your time.

Do you have a phone number or live in Miami FL, because I really don't think Im gonna be able to do this on my own.

Again, thank you for the help and for the patience. This mac was given to me but clearly it needs some updates/upgrades. Not even sure what to call it anymore.
