Help- I have an old IPAD (first generation) that I've lost the passcode for, but it has pictures on it that I want and I don't think they were backed up to Icloud. What can I do?? I've been told that I'd have to wipe it to reset the passcode, but if I wipe it I'd lose any pictures on it..... how is there not a work-around?
there is no work around to protect users data, the ipad can't tell the difference between you forgetting the passcode and somebody who stole or found it not knowing the passcode

Basically, if you cannot remember your Apple ID, password and passcode, then that iPad is already doomed and its data is lost forever!
Should have been making regular/semi-regulae backups of this iPad to iTunes on a full PC or Mac or to Apple iCloud and/or other data storage/backup services long before this issue happened.

If the device passcode has been forgotten, you’ll not be able to recover any data from the iPad as the entire filesystem is secure. The iPad is designed to protect data stored on the device - such that data cannot be accessed unless the device is unlocked.
If you don’t have an iCloud or iTunes backup - or precious data stored elsewhere - all locally stored data on the iPad has been lost. Regardless of the computer system, an independent backup of irreplaceable data should always be kept. After disaster strikes, it’s too late.
If your iPad is disabled, or you have forgotten your iPad passcode, you’ll need to follow this process:

You’ll need access to either a PC (with iTunes installed) or a Mac (with iTunes or Finder - as appropriate for the installed version of MacOS).
You’ll also need your AppleID and associated password. If these have also been forgotten, they can be recovered here:

Unless you AppleID account has not been fully/correctly configured, or has been seriously neglected, recovery of the AppleID and password should not be difficult.
