Pioneer blu-ray not working with 2017 retina MacBook running Big Sur

I have no trouble playing blu-ray disks with a Pioneer BDR-XD05S connected to my 2020 iMac with Big Sur. But I can't play them with Big Sur when the BDR-XD05S is connected to my 2017 retina MacBook, which only has a USB-C port. I tried using a multi-port adapter and a USB to USB-C adapter, both of which worked fine with the MacBook in Catalina. But neither adapter makes the blu-ray disks visible or playable on the MacBook.

I've tried two different blu-ray player apps, both of which worked on the MacBook with Catalina. One I was able to update to a 2020 version. There's no update for the other. But neither will play with the MacBook running Big Sur.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Your Blu-ray player may be susceptible to not receiving the correct mA current when used with a non-powered USB hub, or that USB to USB-C adapter, either of which that may act as a resistor, and cause the Pioneer to misbehave. Try a powered hub with your 2017 MBP, and see if that allows the Pioneer to work as expected.

Thanks, I was eventually solve the problem myself. The Pioneer Blu-ray drive has a cable with two connectors--one for a USB2 port and one for USB3. I'd been trying to use the USB2 connector with my 2020 iMac, which didn't like it. The drive worked correctly when I switched to the USB3 connector, however.
