I purchased a phone from apple and am preparing to send in my old phone as a trade in. When I attempt to erase all content and settings, it asks me for a 4 digit code. I don't know what it is and cant get this completed.

Since they are asking for a 4 digit code, I know it's not my apple id password or my old passcode to get into my phone (because it was 6 digits). How do I get past this step?

On your old iPhone, how about using the reset passcode method? If you try this method then your iPhone will reset the passcode and erase all data. Want to try?

You can reset your passcode by following the instructions in this article by Apple ➔ How to reset your passcode on a disabled iPhone. You will need a computer for this task and all your data on your iPhone will be wiped clean in the process.
