Just started trying to use iCloud - I don't seem to be able to upload from where all my stuff is stored on an external hard drive. I keep nothing on the Mac - it's already full with system and apps. Please advise - and thanks.

No, that's not what iCloud is for, and in actuality, it would be prudent to leave your data on your external hard drive than to trust it in the cloud that's hosted by a company. In other words, you never know the day the company decides to pull the plug on this service though I don't think Apple will do something like that. Or who knows the day you cannot access your data because the servers are down indefinitely.
Besides, iCloud is not as robust as your third-party cloud based options, e.g. OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive/Photos, etc. iCloud is a syncing service that basically syncs your data across all of your devices, making it easily accessible to you.
Thank you so much for this - on dipping around it seems I'm not the only to hold this misconception. I will have a look at the options you mention - is there one that is leaning towards industry standard?

Backup from where?
An external hard drive I have been keeping my back up on - I bought 2T of space on iCloud to have my backup there. I am getting the impression that that's not what iCloud's for.
