That would depend on what you have your Auto-Lock set to. Go to Settings>Display & Brightness>Auto-Lock, and increase the time if you wish. Just remember, if you walk away from the iPad and it does not lock, anyone that picks it up has access to your device and all of your data.

Every time you go in where? The passcode is a requirement for the lock screen, unless you use an iPad with Touch ID or Face ID.
