Best Complete iPhone Backup?

While Quick Start makes getting a new phone and migrating all data from the old phone to the new, what is the best way to backup and restore a phone with all content, including text messages, recent calls, photos, and music.

Us old timers who started with iPods, used iTunes on a local computer for a full backup, and you can do that today. But from what I read, iTunes days are numbered.

So what is the best way to back up all content on the phone as described above? If the phone is lost or damaged, there is a complete backup available for restore.

The best way to create a backup file which is encrypted and preserves all the passwords & Data & Settings is by creating a backup on a Mac or a Windows PC with iTunes installed.

Backup your old iPhone on your computer like this ➔ How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support and then Restore your new iPhone from that backup like this ➔ Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup - Apple Support

iTunes still exists on Windows based PC and is functional as it ever was for the things that it does.

iTunes, however, no longer exists on Macs with macOS Catalina or higher (macOS Big Sur). iTunes has been replaced with the Music app and works just like iTunes however does not perform backups and restore process for iPhones. To back up an iPhone and transfer data, one has to use the FINDER app in macOS Catalina and Big Sur.

Some non-obvious notes:

  • No backup includes music. It is redownloaded from iTunes (or Music on Catalina or later).
  • If you have enabled iTunes Match or have an Apple Music subscription your music is recovered from the appropriate source.
  • No backup includes apps. They are redownloaded from the App Store; only app data is restored from the backup.
  • Anything that you sync to iCloud is not included in the backup; instead, you just sync it to the new phone.
