Most stock apps won't launch after Big Sir Update

I updated my late 2014 iMac Retina 5K to Big Sur last night. Before the update everything was working normally. After the update, there's a big handful of stock apps that will not open and the desktop does not function properly. It will take up to 5 minutes for anything on the desktop to appear, and the only things that work on the desktop are folders. Documents and/or media on the desktop will not open.

I've done the following steps:

  • Force Closed apps that kept "bouncing" on the dock
  • Soft restarted and hard restarted iMac
  • NVRAM Reset and SRAM Reset
  • Booted in SAFE MODE (Problem still existed in SM)
  • Attempted to change permissions on the apps that don't open, but was not able to (logged in under Admin)
  • Hard reboot and installed a "fresh" version of Big Sur.

This issue ONLY happens under the main admin profile. If I log in under another user on the Mac, everything works fine. Google Chrome works fine for the most part, but I had to type the last half of this post on an online notepad and copy/paste it into this form so I could make the post.

I've never had an issue with this Mac before starting from when I got it in late 2014, and this hurts to have it all go to crap this fast. Help please :(

Lnknprk219, this is definitely a permission issue of some sort. Or something (preferences file got corrupt). Which you already knew. I don't have any suggestions besides downloading Etrecheck diagnostic program and running the report to see what it finds. Etrecheck is developed by an Apple Support Communities contributor. You can even upload a non personally identifiable report to your forum post. Let us know what it finds.

I'm glad you posted that the non admin user isn't having these issues.

I hope this helps.

Hi Lnknprk219,

Thanks for coming to Apple Support Communities for help today with Big Sur and apps that aren't opening for you.

It sounds like you have tried this suggested troubleshooting: If you can’t open an app on Mac and If an app freezes or quits unexpectedly on Mac.

If it is still not resolved, please visit Get Support for further help.

Have a fantastic day!
