Automatic Volume Reduction Issue on iphone XR

Since the last OS update (14.2), my iphone XR is automatically lowering the volume when I'm listening to my music to 50%. This has only started happening this week. Today it did it in the middle of the first song I was listening to and is becoming infuriating.

In Sounds and Haprics and Headphone Safety it's turned off and in the Music app the sound check is off and yet it's doing it constantly. During a one hour walk today it happened three times.

I really don't need my iphone telling me when I should be lowering the volume on the music I listen to. This has never been an issue before but it's a massive issue for me now and if it continues will drastically decide if my next phone is an iphone or not if it's behaving like a Nanny and telling me how I listen to my music.

Help on this is greatly apppreciated.

iPhone XR, iOS 14

Hello irishstratfan,

It sounds like you're seeing some issues with the volume on your iPhone unexpectedly changing while listening to music. We will be glad to help.

First, are you using headphones when this happens or are you connected to Bluetooth? If you remove them and disconnect from Bluetooth, does it make a difference?

Are you using any cases with the iPhone? Does this occur when disconnected?

Can you also check your Attention Aware features and turn that off to see if that helps? About Attention Aware features on your iPhone X or iPad Pro

Please let us know, we're standing by.

Just checked with friends with Android phones and none of them are experiencing this or getting notifications to say that this change is in effect.

looks like Apple users only are being penalised which seems ridiculous. Done some searches on this and while EU mentions a 100db limit, manufacturers are not being forced to modify software to enforce limits. Most of these discussions are from between three and seven years ago.

It also doesn’t explain why volume is being forced down to 50%. If this isn’t reversed folks will buy non Apple phones. Most folks I spoke to thought this was either an issue with their phone or their headphones.

Hi,

Thanks for replying.

I’m listening to headphones via Bluetooth. The same Seinheiser headphones that I’ve had for about a year and a half. When the volume cuts to 50%, there’s no gradual reduction, it goes immediately to 50%. This happens with and without the protective case. Also I get a notification from sounds and haptics to say that I’ve been listening to music too loud for seven straight days and that it’s being reduced for my protection so this is a function that is being performed by the phone. My wife has the same model of iPhone and it’s also happening to her and she uses wired headphones. This started for both of us when we updated to IOS 14.2.

As per your suggestion above I’ve now turned off Attention-Aware Features and will see if this works.

Thanks!

There are no such laws. Plus the UK is exiting the EU and as such these “laws” as you state, will not apply to the countries within the UK. But it does forcefully imply these new settings upon us.

Apple has yet again bestowed upon its users what it feels it wishes to. No more no less. A recommendation is not law by the way...

Android has a warning when you go too far and stops the volume being raised until you release the button and press it again then can go up to max volume.

Speakers on BT happen to fall into the same category for me and this is ridiculous...
