Mac Mini (2012) stuck on 10.8.2

Hi there - I just did a factory reset of my 2012 Mac Mini to try to help speed it up. However it seems to be stuck on an old version of Mac OS and I can't update to Big Sur (too new for the old model).

I've tried to search online for a version of Mavericks to update to, but it doesn't seem very clear how to do this. In the Mac app store there's a version of iTunes that it is requesting that I update to - but it won't update and gives error code 102. Not sure if this is relevant.

What can you suggest to help update this?

Thanks. Unfortunately following the link to the app store brings up the following message:

"We could not complete your purchase. The product distribution file could not be verified. It may be damaged or unsigned".

Any other ways of doing this?

Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and download Mojave. It isn't possible to upgrade straight from Mountain Lion to an OS newer than that.
