No matter what I do, my first generation Apple Pencil will not connect to my seventh generation iPad Air. Why is this?

I have not been able to use is successfully yet.
When I plug it in, it requests a pair, then I accept, and it says it connects but it doesn’t work. I have also had battery warnings, yet I charged it for hours before hand.
Sorry, it’s an iPad 7th gen. The Apple Pencil is first generation.

There is no such thing as an 7th gen iPad Air.
They have only just released the 4th Gen iPad Air.
Which iPad do you have? Which generation pencil do you have?
So what happens when you plug it into the lightning connector?
