I updated to Big Sur and now no longer can see all of the files on my hard drive. Where did they go? I now only have folders for Applications, Library, system and users.

Make sure you have all of these checkbox checked in the Finder/General preference pane:
Yes, they all are checked, but I still see only 4 folders when I double click my HD.
Yes, I only have one account.
Go to your System/Apple ID/iCloud preference pane and see if the iCloud Disk is checked. If it is click on the Options button and see what is selected in the Options window.
Upgrades between systems often ask the user if they want to enable iCloud or iCloud Drive and may do so because they are in a hurry to get thru the installation and don't realize what the consequences will be.
I don't use iCloud, I just store everything on my hd and back-ups. I can only view the contents on my hd now by going to System/Volumes/Mac HD. Is there a way to make that come up when I open the HD icon on my desktop, like it used to do? Thanks!
