How do I Mute my Mac with a Remote Control?

I'm looking to get a remote device that would allow me to mute my Mac.

Would a Wireless Presenter do the job? It is a device you typically see one using with a MS PowerPoint presentation.

Is using a remote device even possible? Or must I keep muting volume directly on the Mac?

I'm watching streamed content. And when commercials come about, I want to mute it my Mac, until the show is back on.

Logitech r400 Wireless Presenter

I just bought a Logitech r400 to escape pressing the arrow keys on my keyboard during presentations. [Logitech officially says that the presenter only works under Windows]1 and is specifically designed for Power Point. However, I found it works perfectly under OSX and, with a little tuning, also with Keynote.

Th essence of what this guy says is that this device is a keyboard as far as the Mac is concerned, and you change its keyboard translations to whatever you please [presumably including function keys for Mute/unMute].

Thanks Again Grant!

I’ll give it a try, ASAP. A store down the street has it on hold for me. Might take a few tries to configure the preferences, but once configured correctly, I’ll reply letting you know how it goes.

I like the fact of it being more preferential, rather than being stuck with its own settings.

Having done some research, it might just do the job. Expect a Reply soon.

"There may be other Logitech models that are comparable. That was just the first site I encountered when searching for that term with a qualifier of /Macintosh"

Update:

Look forward to a reply on Sunday or Monday of next week. I plan to purchase it then, because of a chance of a good price. I will let you know how it works out.

Why it is a Good Idea to Purchase:

It is just a pain when I'm streaming something, and I have bend over to mute my Mac, whether it be a commercial or a phone call that pops up.
