4th Gen 2020 M1 Mac mini bluetooth issues with Magic Mouse2

Just got the brand new Mac mini (M1, 2020 8gb and 256gb - macOS big sur 11.0.1). The bluetooth connection between my Magic Mouse 2 and the mini drops during use (2-3 times an hour). The drop is very odd too - it always drops twice in quick fashion (it drops, I wiggle the mouse and click, it reconnects then immediately drops where I wiggle/click again and it connects for a longer period of time).

I worked with apple support who had me remove the plist files, but after rebooting I ran into the same issues. Any advice?

I have the mini connected via usb c cable to my acer 27" monitor. I use the same mouse, keyboard, monitor, and cable to connect to my 2018 MacBookpro 13 (Mac OS Catalina 10.15.7) and have never had issues. I even plugged in the MacBookpro after getting my mini to see if it was happening there again - nope. It's only the mini.

I may have "fixed" the issue with the Magic Mouse disconnecting and reconnecting repeatedly. System Preferences/Bluetooth/Advanced...uncheck "Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer". The issue was happening all morning (and since I received the M1 Mac Mini) and has stopped since I unchecked the box. I am using a USB Keyboard, so that is how I will wake from sleep. So far, so good though.

Apple HAS been resolving these issues; I know this thread is long, but if you read it in its entirety you can see over time how it has improved.

For most of us, upgrading all your devices (M1 Mac Mini), iPhone, Apple Watch to the latest versions HAS worked.

If it has not worked for you, then I suggest you contact Apple. They would probably be very interested in hearing from you and seeing logs off of your computer, in order to further assist you.

That's what a lot of us did, and it DID lead to a solution. Perhaps your situation is different, in which case looking at your specific situation/system setup will help them find a suitable solution for you.

My M1 Mac Mini is currently running:

Version 11.3 Beta 20E5172i

Apple Watch is currently running:

Version 7.3 (18S801) - not Beta

iPhone is currently running:

Version 14.4 - not Beta

As has been previously stated, the bluetooth issues seemed to improve greatly after 11.2.1. I can report that 11.3 is also stable; no bluetooth issues for the last 2 weeks and counting.

I understand it is frustrating, as I was very frustrated initially as well. But just think:

1) Big Sur is a new operating system

2) M1 is new silicone

There is just no way to completely test every possible scenario prior to releasing two major upgrades such as these. While I was not too happy that it took a couple of months to resolve the issue, I personally feel the issue has been resolved to my (and many others') satisfaction.

The M1 Mac Mini is otherwise an excellent computer, and more so now that the Bluetooth issue is better/resolved. I can edit 3 streams of 4K video simultaneously without breaking a sweat on a machine that cost $700. I know of no other $700 computers that can do that.

Someone here suggested getting an Asus USB bluetooth dongle which has worked for me. Not really acceptable but it fixes all the issues I have had apart from a very occasional mouse disconnect when using Final Cut Pro X. I've done all the various software updates for the Macs , iPhones and iPads and iPhones in the house but the built in bluetooth is hopeless. I know this is an issue with interference but thats hardly good enough. In Steve Jobs day someone would have been ritually disembowelled for an issue like this :0)

I have to share that I purchased the OWC new Thunderbolt 4 Dock and all my M1 MacMini issues with Bluetooth and with displays not waking up have disappeared. I routed everything but HDMI to my second screen through the Dock, Bluetooth directly through the MacMini and all is behaving itself. I made sure I had USB-C/Thunderbolt cables to my LG 4K screen, the Dock, and my Thunderbolt drives. I regret I had to purchase a third party dock to get a new Apple computer to behave properly but am finally enjoying a machine that provides high performance and performs predictably.

I've been having similar problems with an Apple Magic trackpad disconnecting randomly from my Mac Mini M1. The trackpad works fine with my Intel Mac Mini - so it's not the trackpad.

After much experimentation, I've discovered that turning off WiFi on the Mac Mini M1 leads to a stable a Bluetooth connection. I have a wired Ethernet connection anyway to the M1 Mini, so I lose AirDrop but gain stability with my trackpad. For the moment it's a workaround until Apple fix it.

I think Apple is aware of the issue now as I received a follow up call today from their technical support after having called them earlier this week to report the issue. However, as I previously wrote, I have not had any Bluetooth connection issues since booting into safe mode and then restarting as they suggested I do when I first called them. Going on about 5 days now without any issues. The technical support person today simply wanted to gather details surrounding the issue (setup, peripherals, frequency, etc.). He indicated booting into safe mode might have cleared cache that resolved it.

Has anyone else tried booting into safe mode and restarting to see if that addresses it?

I know this is strange but ever since I unchecked the allow other blue tooth devices to wake this computer in the advanced setting under bluetooth the problem has pretty much gone away. Since the update to 11.1 I have not had an issue with disconnects. Just before I saw a brief disconnect and reconnect of the keyboard but it was very quick.

My mouse and keyboard have both worked fine since. The only other issue I have experienced and it could be something about the site and that is that ZeroHedge pages do not always completely load on Safari but they do on Opera. Safari still seems to have some problems and not be as quick.

Hi there, I have the same issue with my Mac mini M1 using trackpad, magic keyboard and mouse. The only thing that has helped me so far is turning the wifi off. I use an ethernet cable at the moment, and as long as the wifi stays off the bluetooth works just fine. The moment I turn on the wifi the issue comes back. Not sure if the wifi is interfering with the bluetooth, but so far it is the one thing that has worked for me. Please try that and let us know. Thanks.

So my only solution on a M1 Mac Mini thats seems to be working...at least better (disconnects/reconnects every 5 mins on Magic mouse and keyboard) was to turn off WiFi and use ethernet cable. So far so good. Apple fix this!! I may end up sending this machine back to Apple until resolution found and use a different machine in the meantime.

I have tried i think literally everything and more, than is mentioned in this thread. Reinstall Big Sur, reset V/PRAM, reset BT module, remove and isolate any BT devices to see if anything else interfering ....nothing seems to work. Interesting though when I open my Iphone12 or turn on my BT speaker I tend to see the dropout happening....so devices are interfering somehow...but turning off the WiFi for now works. Its a workaround for now...not a solution.

ok...update after 2 days using Mac mini M1 WITHOUT WiFI turned on. No issues with Magic Mouse or Keyboard. No connections issues what so ever. Didn't drop once. in using it cumulatively about 17hrs.

But this morning I decided to test if the WIFI was the issue or not. So I turned it back on. Within 30 sec of turning on...both mouse and keyboard lost connection. And they both tried to connect again (picture of mouse and keyboard appear) and the appeared and disappeared 2 times. and finally connected after maybe 2 mins.

So there you go....in my case the Wifi is the prim issue. Ive turned it off since and not one connection loss.

FIX THIS APPLE!!!!!

Same problems, Magic Trackpad mouse stalls and stutters.

So now a USB charge cable is plugged into the trackpad all the time and the problem has gone away.

The new M1 mini replaced a 2017 iMac and the performance is incredibly better.

Hopefully the bluetooth fix is software with an update.

If not the wired connection to the the trackpad will be maintained.
