Why am I getting ”could not setup ApplePay, an error occurred while setting up Apple Pay”

While attempting to purchase with Apple Pay, the phone was saying it was not a valid phone number. Just upgraded to iPhone 12 from iPhone 8 and wallet transferred automatically. However I received a new debit card and I thought I updated the card in the phone. Now I can’t add the card at all
